From two people and two clients to State Business Awards finalists!

Back in 2018, we were both deep in the trenches delivering the Newcastle Light Rail project. As our contracts were coming to an end, we found ourselves wondering what was next.

We both knew we wanted to take the leap and start our own businesses. And then came the question that changed everything – “Why don’t we do it together?”

And just like that, Spectrum Comms was born. Just the two of us, two clients and a whole lot of enthusiasm (mixed with a healthy dose of nerves!).

Fast forward to 2020, and we were absolutely terrified about taking on our first employee. What if we didn’t have enough work? What if it didn’t work out? And what about this COVID thing everyone is talking about? It felt like such a huge step at the time.

Today, we’re a team of 14, working on some of the biggest infrastructure projects across NSW and beyond. As Ange often says, ‘Not bad for a girl from Medowie and a girl from Singleton!’.

And now, we’re incredibly proud to share that Spectrum Comms has been named a finalist in the 2026 State Business NSW Awards, following our recent regional win at the Business Hunter Awards for Employer of Choice (Under 20 Employees).

Honestly, we’re still pinching ourselves!

While we certainly hoped the business would succeed and we could make a living doing what we love, we definitely didn’t have ‘State Business Awards finalist’ on our bingo card.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day – juggling projects, deadlines, clients and everything else that comes with running a business. But every now and then, something makes you stop and take stock. When we look back at what our team has achieved, we’re pretty damn proud.

We’ve had the privilege of working on some incredible projects, including major infrastructure that will leave a lasting legacy in our own communities and across the state. We’ve built relationships with wonderful clients, tackled some pretty complex challenges and, most importantly, created a team of talented people who genuinely care about the work they do and the people they work alongside.

From the beginning, we wanted Spectrum Comms to be a place where people could do great work, feel supported and still have a life outside of work. A business built on trust, flexibility, great people and the occasional laugh when things get hectic (which they often do!).

That’s why this particular recognition means so much – we don’t think we are anywhere near perfect, but hopefully it means we have got some of that right!

But it goes without saying, this recognition really belongs to our people.

Our team is what makes Spectrum Comms what it is. They bring the talent, passion, creativity and commitment that make us proud every single day. We couldn’t do what we do without them, and we’re incredibly grateful that they’ve chosen to be part of our Spectrum story.

We’re also very thankful to the clients and partners who have backed us along the way. From those first two clients who took a chance on us to the organisations we work with today, your trust and support have helped us get to where we are.
