Spectrum Comms with Bellingen Shire Council and Salients
Project Objectives
The Coastal Management Act 2016 requires Council to prepare and implement a Coastal Management Program (CMP) which will detail the future use, management, and development of the Bellingen coastal, river and estuary environment in an ecologically sustainable way, for the social, cultural and economic well-being. There are five stages in the CMP process and Stage 1 was completed in 2020 and included preparing a Scoping Study in consultation with the community and other stakeholders to identify the main issues or topics of concern. This work was undertaken by another consultant.
Our Role
Spectrum Comms partnered with coastal engineers Salients to undertake community engagement and technical investigations for Stages 2, 3 and 4 of the development of the CMP. This work included:
- Preparing letters for landowners along the river and estuary
- Preparing a Community Engagement Plan
- Developing communication collateral including posters, corflutes, social media posts & video content, media releases and a
dedicated project website using Social Pinpoint - Developing an interactive online mapping tool using Social Pinpoint
- Facilitating community workshops
Outcomes
- 1,712 website visits from 441 unique visitors
- Management discussions with 22 workshop participants on 39 high and extreme risks, and 77 low and medium risks
- 143 map pins with comments and more than 250 reactions to comments
- Identification of key issues and ideas
